EOR security deposits and fees, provider by provider
What an EOR hire costs beyond the monthly fee: the security deposit each tracked provider holds before it employs someone for you, its setup and offboarding fees, and how it converts your currency, as its own pages state them. Every entry links to the page that says it; where we found nothing on a provider's public pages, we say so.
Of the 75 EOR providers we track, 20 state that a security deposit applies to an EOR hire and 9 that one may apply; 5 say they take none, and for 41 we found nothing about it on their public pages. Where a provider states the size, it is 1 to 3 months of the employee's salary, full employment cost or monthly charges, and providers that describe the refund return it once the employment (at some, the whole account) ends and the final invoices are paid.

Why the deposit matters more than the fee
A security deposit is sized on the employment, not on the provider's fee. When a provider holds a month of an employee's full cost, the cash you hand over before the first payroll can be many times the monthly fee the price list shows, and it stays tied up until the employment ends and the final invoices are settled.
That is why two providers with the same monthly fee can need very different amounts of cash to start: one may hold nothing, another a multiple of a month for every hire. The deposit column above is the one to read before the fee column if your cash is tight.
What to ask before you sign
- Is a deposit required in the country you are hiring in, how many months, and of what: salary, the full employment cost, or every monthly charge including the fee?
- When is it returned after the employment ends, and what can be deducted from it first?
- Can it be reduced or waived, for example with annual prepayment, a credit check or an insurance product?
- Is there a one-time setup or onboarding fee, and a fee when an employee leaves (separate from any severance the law requires)?
- Which exchange rate converts your currency into the employee's pay, and what margin is added to it?
- Are invoices due before payroll runs, and what happens if a payment is late?

Do EOR providers require a security deposit?
Many do. Of the 75 employer of record providers BestEOR.co tracks, 20 state on their own pages that a security deposit applies to an EOR hire and 9 that one may apply (for example by country, after a credit check or on certain payment terms). 5 say they take no deposit, and for 41 we found nothing about deposits on their public pages, so ask them before you sign. How much is an EOR security deposit?
Where a provider states the size, it ranges from 1 to 3 months, measured against the employee's salary, the full monthly employment cost or every monthly charge including the provider's fee, depending on the provider (15 providers state a multiple). Examples, as the providers state them. Employment Hero: 1 month's total cost of employment, including variable pay. Vensure Global: 1 month of expected pay plus Vensure's monthly fee; may be raised where notice is long. Borderless AI: 1.5 months of employment cost paying by ACH, 3 months by wire. Because it is sized on the employment rather than on the provider's fee, even a one-month deposit can be many times the monthly fee.
Is an EOR security deposit refundable?
22 of the 29 providers that take a deposit say on their own pages that it is refundable; the others do not say either way. Each provider's refund terms, where it states them, are linked on this page.
Which EOR providers do not require a security deposit?
Alcor, Gloroots, Tarmack, Wisemonk and Boundless say on their own pages that they take no security deposit for an EOR hire (read October 8, 2026). The other providers either take one, take one in some cases, or do not say.
Do EOR providers charge setup or offboarding fees?
8 of the 75 providers state that a one-time setup or onboarding fee applies (at some, only in some cases) and 23 say they charge none; 4 state an offboarding or early-termination fee and 16 say they charge none. For the rest we found nothing either way on their public pages. An offboarding fee is the provider's own charge, separate from any severance the law requires the employer to pay.
Do EOR providers mark up currency conversion?
13 of the 75 providers publish a markup or margin on converting your currency into the employee's pay, and 9 say they convert with no markup. For the rest we found no exchange-rate terms on their public pages, so ask which rate they use and what margin they add.
